Thesis (M.P.H.)--Northern Illinois University, 2014.
This thesis assesses particulate matter (PM) exposure in the largest city in Eastern Indonesia, where there has been a lack of air quality monitoring. The efficacy of wearing masks was also examined as an individual intervention effort to reduce PM exposures. Handheld particulate counters were used to investigate ambient air quality for spatial analysis, as well as the differences in the exposure of PM2.5 and PM 10 (mug/m3) by using different transportation methods [e.g. motorcycle (n = 97), public minibus "pete-pete" (n = 53), and car (n = 55)]. The differences in PM exposure while wearing masks were also evaluated [e.g. surgical masks (n = 39), bandanas (n = 52), and motorcycle masks (n = 39)]. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to conduct an exposure assessment.

Individual interventions (e.g. wearing a surgical mask) can be an effective way to reduce individual exposures from elevated levels of particulate matter. Wearing surgical masks will reduce the risks associated with PM to safe levels for adult (21 years and older) motorcycle and pete-pete users. Children experience the highest doses of PM10, and wearing surgical masks would not reduce their exposure to safe levels while riding on a motorcycles or a pete-pete. Continuous air monitoring and epidemiological studies need to be conducted in order to develop interventions with policy makers and improve public health.
