The research is based on qualitative data compiled through personal interviews conducted with activists who participated in democracy protests in Burma and who are now living in the United States. The author argues that participation in social action helps define one's identity by elevating one's awareness of his or her place in the world and by the efforts put forth to change the injustices that arise while living in it.

Much of the current research on the pedagogy of activism looks primarily at activists participating within the confines of their home country. This work investigates a diaspora of activists who continue their activism for Burma's democracy from the other side of the world. This paper includes a discussion of learning and knowledge production in the context of political activism. It also sets the context with a brief analysis of the history of Burma and its contemporary politics.
