Thesis (M.S.)--Utica College, 2015.
Social engineering is a dual attack vector that manipulates human behavior and psychology to the determinant of organizations. Social engineers use a mixture of human-based and computer-based attacks to gather information and to infiltrate their targets. While social engineering is not a new occurrence, its abuse by hackers has made it a very relevant topic in the current age. This research will begin by defining the key problems within the study of social engineering, then discuss its definition and the history of the practice. This research will also discuss attack methods, psychological triggers, psychological motivations, and the attack cycle of social engineers. It will conclude with applicable and easily implemented countermeasures organizations can enact. A key piece of this research is to look at how organizations can make the training and awareness of social engineering more applicable and accessible to their employees. Keywords: Cybersecurity, Cyber Intelligence, Albert Orbinati, M.A., social engineering, psychology, countermeasures, mitigation.
