Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study was to examine corporate annual reports for changes in the use of graphic communication when companies experienced net losses as opposed to profits. The study included the Fortune 100 companies and covered the ten-year period of 1985-1994. Elements examined were the numbers of visual elements used, types used, sizes of the different types, colors used, information conveyed, layout and integration of graphic communication and text, integrity of the data displayed, typography, captions used, and placement of graphic communication in four sections of the annual report.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Findings and conclusions. The use of graphic communication or visual elements declined in annual reports prepared for years in which companies experienced net loss. The total number of visual elements used declined, and the numbers of individual tables, photographs, and figures used also declined. The five most popular types of graphics likewise appeared less often in reports of net loss: column graphs, bar graphs, divided bar/column graphs, grouped column/bar graphs, and surface graphs. Annual reports covering net loss years could make much more effective use of graphic communication in disclosing the company's financial status by having a larger number of figures to help the readers see the financial picture and by choosing those figures that are accurate in portraying quantitative data for comparison.
