During several critical incidents, lives of first responders are lost or placed in jeopardy due to the incompatibility of the communications used by responding agencies. This study examines the technology acceptance model (TAM) and its relationship with the interoperability problem faced in Public Safety communications. The study investigates factors that affect TAM and the acceptance of the new interoperability technologies by first responders. One critical assumption made in the study is that the sample group has access to communications systems in which the technology allows interoperable communications. The study developed the sample's level of Perception of Ease of Use, Perception of Usefulness, and Behavioral Intent then examined them against the factors of Gender, Ethnicity, Experience, Rank, Tenure, and Veteran status. Derived from both sworn and civilian employees of a single fire department, the sample population is believed to be representative of similar departments throughout the United States. These findings indicate that there is a negative correlation between tenure, age, and overall experience and the Perceived Ease of Use of the new communications technologies. The study also indicates that there is a positive correlation between Rank and Seniority the Perception of Usefulness of the newer communications technologies. Future research may include departments with a larger ethnic variation and may cross disciplines between types of first responders.
