The purpose of this study was to understand African American adults' perceptions of bullying behavior among children and adolescents through the emergence of a theory. Bullying is a world-wide phenomenon that has been studied for decades. However, studies tend to focus on the characteristics of bullying behavior and the psychological ramifications for victims. Little is known about the perspectives that adults have about child and adolescent bullying behavior, specifically African Americans adults. This qualitative study was founded upon a grounded theory methodology. As a result of the analysis, categories and subcategories emerged from transcripted interviews of one African American female and nine African American males in a mid-size town in the Deep South region of the United States. The theory that emerged indicated that African Americans adults' (within this representative sample) beliefs about child/adolescent bullying is influenced by their deeply rooted cultural perceptions of gender, accountability/responsibility, and causation. It is noted that the perceptions in this study can only be generalized to the participants within this study. Stakeholders to include community members and leaders, law enforcement, school officials, and parents will understand the importance of taking into consideration of how culture impacts beliefs about bullying behavior among children/adolescents. The emergency of this theory begins to explain how cultural beliefs impact one's views on child/adolescent bullying behavior.
