The purpose of this study was to explore how integrative public leaders collaborate to solve public problems. The study also explored how integrative public leaders secure connectedness needed for collaboration. A qualitative, phenomenological approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect stories from six members of the Spokane Homeless Coalition. Two males and four females participated in the study. The participants represented diverse backgrounds and ranged in age from 25 to 63. Three theories provided frameworks for the study: the integrative leadership framework, the leadership for the common good framework and the servant leadership framework. Hermeneutic phenomenological data analysis strategies were utilized. The themes of communication, being committed to the goal, funding mandates, resources, and reaching goals with and without compromise were identified. Sub-themes of serving, power, trust, and personal reflection were also recognized. The findings from this study suggest that successful collaboration is an organic, ongoing process; through which shared empowerment is created. The findings further suggest that the Spokane Homeless Coalition is successful due to a sense of community, supported by the identified themes and sub-themes. The results point towards the need to further explore this phenomenon to understand how collaboration can be created under less supportive conditions. The findings of this study set the course for other researchers to continue seeking an understanding into the role of integrative public leadership and collaboration for the common good.
