Chinese fortunetelling such as eight-characters is based on the Chinese notion of cosmic order using calculation of the five elements. The author emphasizes that Chinese fortunetelling should be seen as a mode of thought or a way of worldmaking, and not "magic" as defined by the eighteenth century Western scholars.

This project explores the existence and persistence of a particular kind of Chinese fortunetelling, eight-characters, in contemporary Taipei, Taiwan. An eight-characters reading is determined by the year, month, date and time of a person's birth. The basic principles of reading an eight-characters are yin, yang, the five elements, heavenly stems and terrestrial branches.

The main body of this dissertation is divided into four parts. The first part introduces basic principles as well as the method and sequence of calculating an eight-characters. The second deals with the device (analogy) and idea (mingyun, prenatal inclination and postnatal factors of a person's life) that connect the principles to real life. The third reveals the acquisition and transmission of the fortunetellers' specialized knowledge and skills. The fourth examines the various functions of fortunetelling in a modern city.

The author suggests that the principles of eight-characters are derived from the Chinese mode of thought (correlative thinking) sustained by an organic, balanced worldview. The device of analogy and idea of mingyun all reflect such a mode of thought and worldview.

Concerning the fortunetellers' low educational background and closed transmission of their knowledge, the author explains why many of the clients' formal education is higher by giving the educated elite's view toward fortunetelling. In regard to the fortunetellers' skills, the author considers them as performance because fortunetellers skillfully use the language to form client attitudes, and induce clients to actions. The author also explains the popularity of fortunetelling in Taipei by providing data which shows that fortunetelling serves a variety of functions such as recreation, sociality, reflection, life arrangement and psychological relief.
