Thesis (Ph.D.)--Bellevue University, 2015.
Entrepreneurship is of key importance in facilitating economic recovery and growth. This dissertation investigates some of the state-like psychological resources that can predict entrepreneurial success (venture survival, employee growth, income growth, and satisfaction with life). Specifically, this study makes three unique contributions to the literature. First, the relationships between psychological capital (PsyCap; a higher-order construct composed of hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism), courage and various dimensions of entrepreneurial success are examined, both directly and indirectly through a mediated model in which courage partially mediates the relationship between PsyCap and entrepreneurial success dimensions. Second, this study also tests a moderated model, in which the interaction between courage and PsyCap predicts additional variance in entrepreneurial success dimensions beyond their main effects. Third, courage is also empirically examined as a potential fifth dimension of PsyCap.

This results of this cross-sectional study of South Dakotan entrepreneurs (N=152) support PsyCap as a predictor of employee growth and satisfaction with life. PsyCap was also a predictor of income growth when entrepreneurs who experienced income growth were compared with the entrepreneurs who did not experience income growth. Neither PsyCap nor courage predicted venture survival. Courage was related to employee growth when entrepreneurs who experienced employee growth were compared with the entrepreneurs who did not experience employee growth. There was also a significant relationship between PsyCap and courage. There was a positive relationship between PsyCap and the Courage Measure (CM; Norton & Weiss, 2009). There was a negative relationship between PsyCap and Woodard Pury Courage Scale-23 (WPCS-23; Woodard & Pury, 2007). Courage was not supported a mediator nor a moderator between PsyCap and any of the entrepreneurial success dimensions. Lastly, courage was supported as a fifth dimension of PsyCap.

Based on the findings, PsyCap and courage are important predictors of entrepreneurial success. Thus, entrepreneurship research should incorporate these and other positive psychological resources to further understand the psychological antecedents of entrepreneurial success. In addition, positive psychological research should consider including courage as a component of the higher-order construct, PsyCap. Moreover, future studies should utilize CM as a courage measure, particularly in the context of entrepreneurship. Finally, the WPCS-23 should be re-examined to determine if future research should drop the fear component from the scale and measure only the willingness to act part.
