Children's physical activity (PA) and active travel (AT) have declined substantially during recent decades. Although research examining built environment (BE) and health-related outcomes has increased substantially in the last decade, few studies have investigated underlying mechanisms working between BE and children's PA and AT in which these relationships operate across conventional suburban and new urbanist neighborhoods. This study targets identifying influences of BE on children's health related behaviors across conventional suburban and new urbanist neighborhoods and also tests new measures using accelerometers and GPS (global positioning system) concurrently. In response to these gaps in the literature, the purpose of this study is threefold. First, parental permission and children's perceptions are examined as mediators within the relationships between neighborhood BE and PA. Second, the association between BE characteristics and active school travel (AST) are examined across neighborhood types. Third, relationships between AST and PA are examined using diverse quantitative data and map descriptions.

A group administered survey was conducted with fourth and fifth grade students, 367 children in conventional suburban and new urbanist neighborhoods. BE variables such as distance to school, children's population density, mixed land use, street length, intersections, sidewalk density, and PA locations around the home were measured within a quarter mile buffer of each participant's home using ArcGIS. Among 367 children, 60 wore accelerometers and GPS units for 7 consecutive days and recorded a travel diary. Data analysis includes descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, Mann-Whitney tests, one way ANOVA and binomibinomialal logistic regression.

The results from first question suggest that connectivity variables and number of PA locations are associated with parental permission. Parental permission significantly influence children's recognition of the PA resources, and positive perception of being outdoors. In a logistic regression (R 2=0.326, p=.000), neighborhood type, parental permission, seeing other children playing, agreeing parents allow to bike, and agreeing that it is easy to walk to transit stop predicted higher PA. In the results from second question, new urbanist children walked and biked more to/from school including independent travels. A binomial logistic regression (R2=.363, p=.000) indicated that neighborhood type, distance, and agreeing on the enjoyment of AST predicted more walking to/from school. Another binomial logistic regression (R2=.394, p=.000) showed that neighborhood type, gender, ethnicity, agreeing that their neighborhood is safe to bike, # of friends, and enjoying AST predicted biking to/from school. Results from the third question indicated that active school commuters (ASC) had higher PA scores and lower BMI than passive school commuters (PSC). In addition, both way AST per day was associated with significantly higher MVPA compared to non AST per school day. Maps described where participants were active during school travel and how BE characteristics in conventional suburban and new urbanist neighborhoods support activities.

In conclusion, neighborhood type was the significant predictor among BE variables. Parental permission significantly influenced children's positive perception about being outdoors, which may lead to higher PA. Based on differences in predictors of walking compared to biking, different considerations for BE are needed to accommodate walkers and bikers. Improved understanding of mediators and moderators of children's PA and AST is needed to identify policy and environmental interventions to improve children's health outcomes.
