Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
Art prizes awarding contemporary visual artists have proliferated exponentially since the 1980s as a result of the progressive globalization of the art world, the growing number of artists coming from regions previously absent from the contemporary international art scene, and the desire of newly rich individuals to acquire works of art. They are now established by a multiplicity of organizations that distinguish their roles and missions in the contemporary art world still largely dominated by the Western perspective. Taking on an increasingly larger presence, the specific new features and characteristics of the art competition go beyond the sole purpose of awarding a cash prize to meritorious artists. This new cultural phenomenon has now more to do with a global artistic manifestation and is one of the many tools, along with biennials and fairs, used to enhance the organizer's visibility, prestige and influence. The increasing proliferation of art prizes around the world seem to be advantageous for artists, however a closer examination of the features, characteristics and mission of four art prizes (Hugo Boss Prize, Hugo Boss Asia Art Award, Abraaj Group Art Prize and Future Generation Art Prize) is essential to evaluate their potential impact on artists.
