Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
This paper examines the relationship between professional identity, human resources (HR) and the New York City commercial art world. Although an art historical background is a standard pathway to a professional career in the arts, academic institutions and various professional development organizations are shifting to include alternate modes of entry into the marketplace. Some of these pathways include obtaining a degree in Art Business, Art Management or Arts Administration. The emergence of a new class of professionals from these pathways calls for a contemporary approach to human resource management. Ultimately, history and theory will act as a foundation in exploring the art world, professional development, and HR functions. Three case studies will analyze these shifts in workforce dynamics in the arts: a survey of emerging students and alumni with Art Business degrees, a New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) job board study that shows where these professionals may fit into the current market, and a set of interviews with HR professionals on the perception of these new candidates as well as the professional development they provide.
