The "rise" of the West in world history has often been perceived as a foregone conclusion. However, exactly how the West arrived at this historical juncture is open to interpretation. In the recent past, scholarship has developed which provides essentially two different views on this occurrence. In brief, one perspective identifies the rise of the West as temporary, based on short term gains in land resources. The second interpretation, though similar, directly links a decline in the East with the ascendency of the West. The current study uses a variety of secondary sources and studies that address aspects of the question of divergence. The work of primary authors of both approaches will be used as well as related views on other factors that point to other variant conclusions. Results will be presented in terms of comparing competing theses as well as an examination of alternative perspectives on divergence.
