Research has established the correlation between equity-compensation and malfeasant behaviors, but the problem is that agency theory, the dominant theory of motivation in economics and many behavioral fields, is unable to account for the direct and causal relationship between equity compensation and manager malfeasance. The direct relationship between compensation and malfeasance discredits agency theory, and compensation research to date has failed to provide a plausible explanation for the unexpected correlation between these variables. Motivation crowding theory is a controversial theory that has been used to explain behavior that contradicts the relative price effect. The purpose of this quantitative study was to experimentally assess whether the correlation between equity-based compensation models and malfeasant behavior is caused by the crowding-out of motivation, and not by rent-seeking. A nonprobability cluster sample of 50 volunteer participants from post-secondary institutions in Alberta, Canada, was used experimentally to quantitatively examine whether motivation crowding could explain the malfeasant behaviors that have been established in equity-compensation experiments. Motivation crowding effects were determined by examining whether compensation timing (the independent variable) had any measureable effects on task completion rates (the dependent variable) using a binary choice regression model. Results show that individuals whose motivation is crowded-in using ex-ante compensation are no more likely to complete a given task than their counterparts whose motivation has been crowded-out by sole reliance on the external reward system. No statistically significant correlation was found between compensation timing and task completion (p=0.0745). Additional research, conducted on a broader segment of the population, with a larger study sample, using more significant rewards may help researchers refine the results of this experimental investigation.
