This study has responded to the call of filling the gap of qualitative inquiries in authentic leadership research. Interview data were collected from six, self-identified female authentic leaders. Findings portray female authentic leaders as recurrently transparent, empathetic, and altruistically invested in their followers. Additionally, a principal unexpected finding emerged portraying authentic leadership as a continually evolving and developmental progression that operates from mediating conditions. As this study's findings have presented trait characteristics of authentic leadership, it has also presented an internal growth process that was evident in each participant. Researcher recommendations include leadership training programs that focus on enhancing leader self-reflectiveness and self-awareness, along with the use of a "life-story" approach to authentic leadership development, so leaders can better understand where they began, where they are, where they desire to be, and how these understandings fit into a deeper awareness of their true selves.
