Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are recently identified as a class of porous polymeric material. They consist of metal ions, linked together by organic bridging ligands. MOFs are new development on the interface between molecular coordination chemistry and material sciences. Linkers are of utmost importance in MOFs. Many properties of MOFs such as pore size, shape of the pore, surface area and functionality depend on the type of organic linker used. 1,4-Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles are a class of 10?-electron aromatic heteropentalenes which can be used as organic linkers for MOFs because of their strong fluorescent, optical and adsorption properties. Five 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-based organic linkershave been synthesized by a one-pot reaction using p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst. All these target organic linkers were characterized by 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and HRMS.
