Respondents tended to define domestic violence in physical and sexual terms and were less likely to view domestic violence as psychological abuse. The majority of the sample did not sanction the use of violence between spouses or believe that physical violence as an effective problem-solving strategy. Although the model minority myth has been employed to describe Chinese Americans, findings indicated that Chinese Americans have been affected both directly and indirectly by domestic violence. However, physical victimization rates in this study were lower compared to national rates.

The relationship between attitudes and behaviors was also examined. Findings indicated no or low but significant correlations between perceptions of domestic violence and the perpetration and victimization experiences with domestic violence.

Chinese Americans experienced depressive symptoms that were slightly higher than mainstream community norms. Gender role beliefs, acculturation, and demographic factors such as age, length of residence in the U.S., household income, and educational level were not significantly related to their psychological well-being. However, Chinese Americans who have perpetrated psychological abuse or who have been psychologically abused by a spouse/partner were more likely to experience both depressive and somatic symptoms.
