520 $a Conquistador imperialism saw the Far East as an arena of conquest for the sake of conquest. The most eloquent exponent of this idea was the late nineteenth-century Inner-Asian explorer Nikolai Mikhailovich Przhevalskii, and this chapter focuses on his ideas. While Przhevalskii's ideas were not unique to Russia, "Asianism," the fin-de-siecle philosophy that stressed Russia's Asian heritage and destiny, had few parallels abroad. The poet, newspaper publisher, and intimate of Nicholas II, Prince Esper Esperovich Ukhtomskii, was the leading advocate of this important but little-studied ideology.
520 $a The second and third parts explain how Imperial Russia became entangled in the Far East at the turn of the century. The story has often been told, but most scholars did not enjoy full access to the relevant tsarist archives. In describing the diplomacy, this dissertation will also examine how policy-makers in St. Petersburg thought about those events. Government memoranda, "what one clerk wrote to another," provide important clues about "the official mind." However, the press, "thick journals," popular books, and other public sources also tell us much about these ideas. The narrative ends with Admiral Togo's night-time raid on Nicholas II's Pacific Fleet at Port Arthur on January 26, 1904, which began the war with Japan (all dates are according to the Julian calendar then in use in Russia).
