This study presents an overlay of a weaver's creative process with a model from Oriental Traditions as a vehicle for self-discovery. First, the creative process is described from the perspective of the individual artist immersed in the creation of five woven pieces. Photographs of the weavings are included.

520 $a Second, a cyclical way of living derived from the Five Elements of Oriental traditions is presented as a model for the creative process. The social context of the creative process is given further elucidation through a description of village life in China, 2000 B.C. It is broadened again through an account of the author's recent journey in the Southwestern United States, with an emphasis on the land, native people and their creative interpretation of life through the arts.
520 $a Third, the weaving life of the author is examined in conjunction with the phases of the cycle described in the Five Element model. Through introduction of the Five Element model, the author enlarges upon previous studies which examine weaving and process.
520 $a Fourth, in a description of the author's experience as weaver and teacher of weaving, the Five Element model is revisited. In remembering and passing on to weaving students, the author manifests the creative process through the act of weaving.
