Management practices for Cao Hai Nature Reserve (Guizhou, China) have been challenged by an increasing human population, economic development and the inadequate understanding of wildlife habitat requirements. This research, conducted from 1994 to 1996 at Cao Hai, addresses the need to integrate wildlife habitat requirements with the needs of local people through a focus on the Black-necked Crane, one of the most endangered crane species in the world.

Waterbird counts, wintering time budgets, habitat selection analyses, fecal analyses, and radio tracking were employed in this research to determine habitat preferences of wildlife species in the reserve. Shallow-water marsh and sedge meadow at Cao Hai are relied on by cranes for foraging and roosting while grasslands at Cao Hai determine the size of the Bar-headed Goose population. Cao Hai's deep and shallow waters support one of the largest wintering populations of waterbirds in southwestern China. These natural habitats at Cao Hai, however, have been greatly altered by human activities and continue to be used by local people who need Cao Hai's natural resources to survive.

Preservation of Black-necked Cranes and Cao Hai's wetland ecosystem requires management practice that focuses on reserve zoning, water level manipulations, and directing economic activities away from a heavy reliance on Cao Hai's limited natural resources. In addition, protection of the Cao Hai wetland ecosystem requires that the surrounding uplands are used wisely, including effective erosion control.
