Merge is a live dance performance integrating dance and motion graphics on stage creating a unique immersive experience. Through combining real-life human movement and computer-generated graphics, it is possible to introduce the randomness of motion into the digital world, while introducing the imaginary force of computer graphics into a stage performance.

During the performance, three projectors and a motion capture device to generate interactive motion graphics in real-time are employed. Two layers of screen material display the animation both in foreground and background. The Dancer(s) can move between the layers and interact with the image.

Interactive motion is used in three different methods: active interaction, passive interaction and interpolated interaction. With active interaction, a performer's motion data is captured through motion detection devices and then translated into arrays of numbers. Passive interaction requires a dancer to perform according to the motion graphics projected on screen. Interpolated interaction requires a controller to manipulate graphics and provide cues for the graphical elements accordingly. In this project, all three methods are evaluated and presented.

The performance exhibited titled Merge, is approximately ten minutes long. Throughout the performance, the idea of a merging world is addressed and depicted by illustrating a different time, space and perspective in each stage. It offers viewers an opportunity to observe our world from multiple perspective angles within a ten-minute presentation, encourages them to reconsider the value of nature, and the construction of time and space. The main subject represents the three basic elements: art, technology and design.
