Reading J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium with Plato's dialogues draws an attentive reader to see the rational underpinnings and motives of Tolkien's work more clearly. Tolkien's work cannot be rightly judged without such an understanding. For the works of both men are designed to draw us further into thinking about and feeling the differences between an education into virtue (which is informed and preserved by the marriage of the aesthetic and the rational) and sophistry (the semblance of reason which warrants succumbing to various aesthetic temptations and turning away from virtue). Both works aim to move us to desire a life---both as an individual and as a community---in which such differences are evident and beauty, truth, and goodness, given their proper due, hold sway.
