This mixed-methods study explored the relationships between exposure to potentially traumatic events and perceptions of parenting self-efficacy for poor Black and Latino mothers with a history of being affected by the child welfare system. The theoretical framework undergirding this study was social cognitive theory. The types and timing of exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) for mothers with single and multigenerational child welfare system (CWS) involvement were documented using quantitative surveys. A life histories approach was utilized in qualitative interviews to explore the severity of exposure to PTEs, and any resulting evidence of complex and compound trauma with conditions of extreme stress (CCTCES). The interviews also explored any connections between CCTCES and mothers' perceptions of parenting self-efficacy. The impact of mothers having single versus multigenerational CWS family involvement was also explored. A sample of 85 mothers completed: a demographic questionnaire; a modified version of the Adverse Childhood Events (ACEM) questionnaire; and the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (PSOC). Of those 85 mothers, twenty completed a semi-structured interview in addition to the study surveys. Of the 20 mothers that completed the interviews, 10 had single generational CWS involvement while the remaining 10 had multigenerational CWS involvement.

Results of this study showed that mothers in this study had rates of trauma exposure three times higher than what can be expected in the general population when raw ACE scores were used. Results from the ACEM measure indicate that for chronic and compound exposure to trauma, mothers in this study experienced rates of five times or more the rates of the general population. Exposure to PTEs peaked in childhood and youth and trended lower for mothers once they entered adulthood. Household dysfunction, a subscale of the original ACE instrument, seemed to be related to increased incidents of abuse. Neglect in the household, mother's adult trauma exposure along with employment, were significantly associated with perceptions of parenting self-efficacy. Implications for service providers and policy-makers that interface with poor Black and Latino mothers affected by the child welfare system are discussed.
