Global environmental change has exerted increasing effects on the security and well-being of societies. Thus its human dimensions have attracted the attention of the scientific community recently. Because the human causes and consequences of environmental change are not evenly distributed over the earth, a regional approach to analysis is essential.

This dissertation, with the premise of a regional study of environmental change, selects the Ordos Plateau to analyze drastic environmental change (both degradation and improvement) under the centralized socialist socio-political system of China. Human driving forces of environmental change are analyzed in a socio-political context, including population increase, cultural values and beliefs, economy (economics), technology, governmental policy, and resource use institutions. The primacy of driving forces in their relationship to environmental change is analyzed using Graph Theory. An analysis of societal responses addresses how human perception of environmental change has evolved and how different levels of governments and local people have responded to the degradation. Given the predominance of government policy in Chinese society, governmental policies--political, socioeconomic, and environmental--receive particular attention as both a driving force and a societal response. The concept of environmental criticality is explored in examining the environment-society relationship over time.
