International conflict (and therefore peace) tend to happen in some areas of the world. Why are some regions more peaceful than others? Unlike the conventional literature which identified what kind of dyad is prone to conflict, this study investigates how international conflict is affected by regional contexts and how it may offer an alternative explanation for regional variation in war and peace. Through a set of statistical analyses and the case of the East Asian region, I argue that political interactions between states produce spatially-bound externalities, affecting other states in a local area. Ongoing international rivalries make neighboring states more prone to hostile relationships, and the hegemonic presence of a global power in the region produces conflict-suppressing externalities in the proximate area. This study thus shows that regional contexts shape conflict and peace among local states in multiple ways, suggesting that it is fruitful to explore the influence of contexts outside a dyad.
