Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2015.
Materials in nano size range have seen a tremendous development over the past two decades. In this dissertation defense, you will be presented a strange phenomenon that could only be observed when crystal shrinks to nanosize. Localized Surface Plasmonic Resonance (LSPR) is a combination of electromagnetic wave and oscillation of free charge carriers on the nanoparticle surface. This physical behavior of nano-object under light excitation has attracted great attention due to their promise not only in therapeutic application such as photoacoustic imaging, photothermal/dynamic therapy and drug delivery but also in enhancement in photovoltaic efficiency, realization of metamaterials and super-lensing. This dissertation describes new approach to synthesize plasmonic nanomaterials, whose chemical, physical properties are investigated. We also demonstrated their potential for theranostics by applying these materials in photoacoustic imaging.
