As life expectancy increases, elderly individuals are not always interested in continuing life with the prospect of progressive physical and mental deterioration. Some want to die. In the Netherlands, one of the few countries in the world that has legalized euthanasia, a public debate questions whether these senior citizens should have legal options to ask for dying assistance, a debate which has been termed the Completed Life issue. Research into the thoughts of aging adults about their end-of-life options is needed. The purpose of this study was to discover the themes Dutch citizens consider important in the discussion about Completed Life and to examine their preference for self-determination in this context. Self-determination theory provided the theoretical foundation. This research had a qualitative, narrative design using a primarily inductive methodology to study 100 petitions that were selected as a stratified sample. An applied thematic content analysis procedure ensured the identification and structuring of the emerging themes and arguments. The findings showed that Dutch citizens who are in favor of a self-chosen death fear future situations in which life may become unbearable. They desire more control and want options to choose for a dignified way to die. Many petitioners witnessed suffering and death of a loved one and expressed their hope that similar suffering may be avoided with legal options for dying assistance. Self-determination theory in the context of end-of-life decision-making was confirmed. Petitioners expected that shared decision-making and legal options to choose for death would lessen their anxiety and increase their well-being. Implications for social change lie in the identification of issues that need to be discussed when talking about death and dying, not only in the political arena, but also in the communication between aging individuals and their health professions.
