This case study examines how internal resources impact the experience of resilience for police officers who have been exposed to traumatic incidents in the line of duty. The exposure of police officers to traumatic incidents is an integral part of their duties, and puts them at an increased risk of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other Acute Stress Disorders. There has been significant research that examines how police officers cope with stress, but there is little research that focuses on resilience. Although coping and resilience are similar, there are some important differences between them. Coping relates to methods and actions that are used to deal with stressful incidents, while resilience relates to long-term recovery and growth, which provides a more effective method for reducing the risk of PTSD. According to positive psychology, all individuals have the elements to support resilience, and these elements can be strengthened, leading to an increased level of resilience. These factors include a number of internal resources. In order to increase the level of resilience, and decrease the risk of PTSD for police officers it is necessary to understand the impact of the officers' internal resources on their experiences of both the traumatic exposure and their level of resilience following the incident.
