Most of Dante's literary criticism has traditionally been rooted in the cultural fabric of Christian and Classical scholarship. Not enough has been said about non-Christian influences on Dante and more specifically, about his interaction with the deep and significant presence of Jewish mystic traditions on the Italian peninsula which were well established at the time of Dante's poetic production. Elements of Jewish mysticism were incorporated by Dante not only in the description of his poetic expression, culminating in a mystical experience, as described in Paradiso Canto XXXIII, but also embraced by the poet as the main reference for the total structure and organization of The Divine Comedy. This study will present a comparative analysis between the practices advocated by Jewish mysticism in the quest for spiritual elevation and those described by Dante in The Divine Comedy. This analysis will be based on the historical premise discussed by Moshe Idel, according to which, the traditions of Jewish Hekhalot literature were present in the cultural fabric of Italy from the 10th century onward. Idel provides historical evidence of the importance of the Italian port cities of Bari and Otranto, which functioned as the strategic connection between the source of Jewish mysticism in Israel and Spain to its destination in other European countries. Idel's historical research on the established tradition of Jewish mysticism on the Italian peninsula in the XI and XII centuries has been substantiated also by Giorgio Battistoni, whose research Dante, Verona e la Cultura Ebraica discusses in detail Dante's cultural formation within the fabric of Jewish traditions in the city of Verona.
