The research questions were: (1) Do Taiwanese female college freshmen perceive counselor effectiveness differently when different counseling styles are used to counsel a client with college major selection? (2) Do Taiwanese female college freshmen perceive counselor effectiveness differently at different stages of counseling a client with college major selection? (3) Are there any interaction effects between counseling styles and stages of counseling on the perceived counselor effectiveness when counseling a client with college major selection?

A 3 x 2 factorial research design units used with three counseling styles and two stages of counseling as the independent variables. The dependent variable, perceived counselor effectiveness, was measured by both the Counselor Rating Form-Short Version (CRF-S) and the Counselor Effectiveness Rating Scale. Six different counseling sessions (three styles x two stages) were recorded on six videotapes and each videotape was shown to one group of participants.

The results of the two-way ANOVAs on the CRF-S showed that participants perceived the counselor as more effective when the Relationship Centered Counseling style was used at the working stage than at the beginning stage. Relationship-Centered Counseling style was also perceived as more effective than either the Problem-Solving or Client-Centered Counseling style at the working stage. The results of counseling style main effects indicated that participants perceived the Relationship-Centered Counseling style as more effective than either the Problem-Solving or Client-Centered Counseling style. No main effect of perceived counselor effectiveness for stage of counseling variable was found. Taiwanese counselors might consider incorporating Relationship-Centered Counseling theory and techniques into their counseling style as a result of its perceived effectiveness, particularly at the working stage of counseling.
