The purpose of the present research was to explore the current status of play therapy in the elementary schools of Taiwan and the possibility for wider adoption of this technique in school counseling. Play therapy, the therapeutic use of play that originated in the western culture, has attracted the attention of elementary school counseling professionals and is being integrated with indigenous counseling in Taiwan. This technique has proven effective with increasing use in many countries in America, Europe, and Asia.

To provide a more complete understanding about the growth of play therapy in Taiwan's elementary schools, the insights of four counselor educators and three elementary school counselors were explored through this phenomenological qualitative study. Two individual interviews, including structured and conversational techniques, were audio-taped with each participant. The interview data were transcribed and analyzed by the investigator and another analyst using a variety of qualitative techniques.

Eight assertions emerged through inductive analysis and cross-case analysis: (1) perception of play as a medium in counseling procedures, (2) affirmation of play therapy compatibility in school counseling, (3) affirmation of play and its therapeutic values regardless of cultural heritage, (4) needs for including play therapy programs as a part of professionals' roles, (5) immature development of theoretical approaches, (6) insufficient resources for professional growth, (7) recommendations from participants, and (8) controversial issues.

Two general assertions further emerged: Developmental Potential and Disadvantaged Environment. They implied that although the philosophical and environmental foundations of play therapy were not soundly established in Taiwan, the research participants held positive beliefs in the future growth of the approach in Taiwanese society. However, to achieve such growth requires serious attention to providing a suitable infrastructure in which play therapy can thrive.

Recommendations based on the findings of this study include: the need for building of awareness and conceptual understanding of child counseling and play therapy, the enhancement of school counseling manpower, the advancement of the school counseling system, the enrichment of empirical and practical knowledge in play therapy, the facilitation of the professionalism of mental health counseling, and the adjustment of educational resources allocation and budgeting.
