In this dissertation I investigate the function of the 3 main comic roles (mo, jing, and chou) in the early Southern Song play, Top Graduate Zhang Xie, as well as some aspects of their performance. From its very early stages, Chinese drama relied both for its composition and performance on the division and specialization of roles; types were created to fit these roles. I show how role formation is indicative of the structure of early Southern theater and explain how these three roles follow a set of formulaic routines which they repeat in each comic section. Comedy was a requirement for all Chinese drama, and the typical structure of a dramatic piece alternates comic scenes with serious scenes maintaining the balance between the two. In Zhang Xie, however, the comic scenes played by comic roles dominate the performance. Recurrent patterns of language and action show that these scenes were meant to be performed rather than read. In addition to discussing role organization, I also examine passages in the text that provide clues as to how comedy was performed. In the last chapter, I include a full translation of the play.
