This research is a genealogical analysis of how the concept of shou (slenderness) has been influenced by transnational economic links, cultural asymmetries and political struggles over the past forty years and how this concept has been imposed upon women in Taiwan.

Methodologically, a poststructuralist approach to history is used to produce another discourse for problematizing the shou-shen (slender-bodied) phenomenon. This research selects weight-loss advertisements in mainstream newspapers as the main historical materials along with other cultural texts to demonstrate various constructions of shou in different cultural contexts.

Theoretically, shou is seen as a specific power-laden construction rather than a neutral measure of weight. It can carry out two complementary operations: firstly, intextuation, which means that an individual body is transformed into the signifier of shou; secondly, incarnation, which means that the logos of shou becomes the style of the flesh.

On the basis of a transnational approach, this research examines weight-loss advertisements within the postcolonial context and finds that shou-shen culture in Taiwan is not simply a local cultural phenomenon, but a product of the long-term interaction between Taiwan and the world economy. In Taiwan, shou was not seen as an ideal body style until Taiwan was integrated into the world system of industrial capitalism. Shou has been transformed four times over four decades. These transformations are closely related to the shifts in Taiwan's economic conditions. Influenced by Taiwan's modernization, shou has its meaning shifted from a symptom of disease to a mark of health and beauty.

As an apparatus of power, shou engenders different truth and power effects upon men and women; women are expected to stay slim more than men are. As a cultural site, the concept of shou is appropriated by different social forces in attempting to govern the female body. In this respect, the meaning of shou is not fixed, but is continuously changing, being related to the struggle for political, economic and social power.
