Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2016.
The purpose of this study was to explore whether an intervention program specific to child service workers would increase their awareness and levels of empathy, in order to increase the willingness to intervene when witnessing bullying behaviors. This study used a quantitative one-group pretest/posttest design. The population included 28 staff members of a community based organization an afterschool enrichment program. The staff members completed a pre-Anti-Bullying Awareness Training (ABAT) survey, participated in a 50 minute ABAT, and completed a post-ABAT survey. The measures used included an Anti-Bullying Awareness Questionnaire (ABAQ) to understand levels of awareness and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) to understand levels of empathy. The findings of this study did not show significant effectiveness for an increase in awareness or empathy after the Anti-Bullying Awareness Training (ABAT). However, the child service workers displayed high levels of awareness in the pretest, revealing a need to create various levels of training based on educational experiences.
