Research strongly supports the physical and psychological benefits of adaptive sports participation for individuals who have sustained a spinal cord injury. Absent from the literature, however, is research on the introduction of adaptive sports during inpatient rehabilitation for this particular population. Thus, the purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to evaluate and assess the benefits and limitations of first time exposure to adaptive sports during inpatient rehabilitation in young adults ages 18 - 30 who have sustained a traumatic lower level spinal cord injury. The study was built on conceptual framework that integrates Saad Nagi's disablement model and George Engel's biopsychosocial model with Carl Roger's patient-centered theory. Purposeful sampling was used to gather study participants. Subjects included young adults who had sustained a traumatic lower level spinal cord injury within the 5 years prior to interview and had completed inpatient rehabilitation. An in-depth, semi-structured interview was performed with each participant and focused on understanding the experience of first time exposure to adaptive sports during inpatient rehabilitation, specifically the perceived benefits and limitations. Interview data was analyzed through the process of coding, in which emerging themes were identified and discussed. Themes were then used to draw conclusions pertaining to the primary research question and reveal topics for potential future inquiry.
