Live crowds and anxiety play a significant role in sport, and this study examined the relationship of the two with performance outcomes in high school athletes. The Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2; Smith, Smoll, Cumming, & Grossbard, 2006) was used to assess levels of somatic anxiety, worry, and concentration disruption in 25 high school basketball players. To assess performance outcomes, each participant performed in a three-point shooting contest once with and without a crowd present. Results revealed that each factor of anxiety increased in the with-crowd condition compared to the without-crowd condition, but only concentration disruption displayed a statistically significant difference. Performance outcomes increased in the with-crowd condition compared to the without-crowd condition, but the difference was statistically nonsignificant. However, the increase suggests that anxiety elicited by the crowd was facilitative towards performance. The implications of these outcomes are discussed, and issues such as sample size and home court effects are considered as possible contributors to the results.
