Status hierarchies are an integral part of society and enhance or moderate human interactions both consciously and subconsciously. One of the most robust examples of contemporary status hierarchy and bureaucratic organization in the United States of America is the U.S. Army. The formal status hierarchy-construct of the U.S. Army limits interactions among group members, dictates an individual's scope of authority and responsibility, and moderates individual contributions based on military rank. The primary purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study is to explore the lived experiences of 13 Soldiers to understand how they conceptualize and differentiate the formal status hierarchy at select U.S. Army military intelligence battalions and to determine congruence between the formal status hierarchy and member conceptualizations. This phenomenological research study will provide descriptive data regarding participants' lived experiences and conceptualizations of the formal status hierarchy within the U.S. Army's distinct bureaucratic organizational management domain. It may assist to understand how divergent status hierarchy conceptualizations enhance or moderate organizational design and management processes, which are designed to garner efficiencies and maintain organizational vitality. Currently, contextual data regarding these experiences are not available in contemporary scholarly literature. Congruency between the formal status hierarchy and individual member conceptualizations of status is necessary to maintain efficiency, unity-of-effort, and vitality in bureaucratic business organizations such as the U.S. Army. This research study will explore participants' lived experiences to understand the degree of fidelity between their conceptualizations of the formal status hierarchy and the prescribed organizational rank structure.
