Today, the livelihoods of over 45,000 families in Nicaragua who depend on the production of coffee as a major source of income are currently being threatened by serious environmental concerns, most notably La Roya, or coffee leaf rust, which has been devastating crop production in the area since 2012 and anthropogenic climate change which has and will continue to make El Nino, hurricanes and droughts, each of which significantly impact crop production, more frequent and intense.

The result of these environmental crises has put already impoverished farmers in even more dire circumstances, as production and income plummet simultaneously. While there are a number of international and domestic organizations providing some aid to the communities, this research focuses on the efforts of capitalist organizations providing aid to their suppliers through corporate social responsibility grants to determine how strategies are should be adjusted to account for changing climatic conditions and environmental threats.

At least in theory, this could be an effective form of sustainable development in agrarian communities because multinational companies have access to the supply chain, have specific goals and are held accountable to their investments by various stakeholders. Additionally, these contributions act more as investments than donations, and the donors are greatly impacted by environmental and climate threats making them more likely to invest in steps to mitigate the consequences of the crises. These are some of the many shortcomings of transnational and intergovernmental organizations, so finding ways to correct them may ultimately lead to development efforts that are more sustainable in the long-term.
