Research studying the relationship between child abuse and early adulthood substance dependency reveals a positive correlation influenced by cultural dynamics and familial characteristics. To highlight such factors among Iranian individuals, the author reviewed the existing literature on Iranian history, traditions, and dominant family and cultural values that influence childrearing attitudes, child maltreatment, and early adulthood substance dependency. This review highlighted a strong association between childhood abuse and negative outcomes in adulthood, specifically, substance addiction, and identified the gaps in literature. Moreover, there is a scarcity of clinical research on treating Iranian populations in the United States. Following immigration to the U.S., many Iranians experience a prominent culture shock and grief over their homeland, culture, broken family connections, and loss of social class, thus rendering them susceptible to developing psychological symptoms. Input from the field consultants provided a comprehensive view of the major presenting concerns among Iranian-American clients, and cultural implications when working with these clients who have child abuse histories and/or chemical dependency, and with Iranian families to target parenting and family conflict.
