Thesis (M.A.)--Mills College, 2014.
The purpose of this study was to examine reflective practice in early childhood special educators through the use of a specific form of reflection known as "This I Believe." This narrative study supported the author in gaining a better understanding of the role of reflection in teachers' professional lives through the stories they told about their work with children. Participants of this study included two Mills College alumni educators working in early intervention and/or preschool settings as well as three Mills College graduate student teachers preparing for the field. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and written reflections, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis and values coding. Through "This I Believe," professionals were found to have an increased awareness of their values and beliefs related to teaching. This study reveals early childhood special educators' perspectives on teacher reflection and provides insight into how these professionals may be better supported in reflective practice in the future.
