Thesis (M.S.S.)--University of Colorado at Denver, 2015.
Scientists have long grappled with an issue known as "the Species Problem" or how to define species. To date, most scientists agree that species represent the fundamental unit of evolution, the most specific state by which a group of organisms can be identified. The process of organism classification, known as taxonomy, has now become an exercise in determining evolutionary history. However, many contend that the term "species" does not represent a unit in nature. Yet a concise definition of species is needed not only to describe the natural world but for environmental policy and public health.

Perhaps the best way to address the practical and philosophical short comings of the current species paradigm is to abandon evolutionary based classification in favor of ecological niche based criteria. An ability to respond to the environment is a characteristic shared by all living organisms allowing for a uniform method of classification for all life forms. Ecology and characters of an ecosystem are the driving force behind evolutionary fitness. Additionally, ecological based classification has the potential to meet the needs for a species definition outside the scientific community in a more parsimonious way.

Evolutionary based identification criteria has been especially difficult to use for single celled microorganisms. Microbiologists have now begun to incorporate ecological characters in their definition of closely related microbial species proving that ecological parameters in taxonomy are feasible. While there are a number of logistical issues to study before any full scale implementation, ecological taxonomy deserves full consideration as an alternative to traditional classification techniques. This thesis seeks explore the species problem as it pertains to scientific philosophy and social sciences while exploring the ecological model as a potential replacement for the current paradigm.
