Americans today equate the Woman's Suffrage Movement with "woman power," assuming that female activists solely spearheaded the crusade. Contrary to this popular belief, male advocates campaigned alongside suffragettes for equal voting rights as part of the movement. Male suffragists during the mid 1800s and early 1900s supported the cause on their own accord or through various groups, but with no recognizable impression due to issues of race and lack of formal organization. However, at the beginning of the twentieth century, a radical, male pro-suffrage association emerged and fought for equal franchise on the principle of progressive reform towards true democracy. The Men's League for Woman Suffrage of New York championed for women's voting rights for the sanctity of humanism by means of socialism---not specifically women's equality. Evidenced in their writings and speeches, male activists of MLWS disassociated voting in the legislative body from masculinity. Male pro-suffrage support proved crucial to the movement for women's franchise as men lobbied other men to vote for gender-neutrality in politics. Concurrently, through their reform efforts, members of MLWS personified an unorthodox model of the male identity that drastically differed from traditional masculinity at the time.
