Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wilmington University (Delaware), 2014.
This purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement in middle school students in Delaware. In addition to examining the relationship of physical fitness and academic achievement by sub groups such as school district, ethnicity, gender, grade, and socio-economic status. The study also examined the relationship of physical fitness and academic achievement using each individual FitnessGRAM test. Instruments in the study included the FitnessGRAM to measure physical fitness, Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System (DCAS) to mean academic achievement and categorical variables through school records. Participants included 5,256 middle school students in Delaware that had complete data sets for all instruments used. The study focused on a cross-sectional research design. Statistical tests included the Pearson Product Momentum Correlation Coefficient and ANOVA. The Pearson r test found a moderate significant correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement in both reading and mathematics. The ANOVA tests found significant differences between subgroups when it comes to physical fitness and academic achievement. Finally, a significant correlation was found in the relationship between each of the individual FitnessGRAM tests and academic achievement, suggesting that students who are in the Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) perform better academically than students not in the HFZ. It is recommended that future research focus on a longitudinal study that examines the relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement in K-12 students. In addition, future research should focus on the intensity of physical activity/physical fitness and its relationship with academic achievement. Finally, it is recommended that future research includes a focus that examines the relationship between physical activity/physical fitness, brain activity and academic achievement in students.
