Thesis (Ed.D.)--Lincoln Memorial University, 2014.
The study explored the leadership roles, meaningful places, and significant objects in a specific urban, homeless community. The accomplishments from the research project resulted from a review of empirical literature on the evolution of homelessness in the United States, similar homeless facilities, risk factors for displacement, and participants' interview descriptions about their photographs that explained how the leadership roles, meaningful places, and objects influenced them and the destitute in their community. The 13 participants consisted of 11 homeless clients at a facility in East Tennessee and two supervisors. Data analysis from the homeless narratives revealed the emergence of three prevailing themes: loss, adaptation, and retrospectiveness. The homeless narratives asserted displaced people created their life course through decision-making, adaptive behaviors, and influences within their social environment.
