Thesis (M.F.A.)--University of California, Irvine, 2014.
Novice dance teachers commonly lack pedagogical knowledge, confidence, and proficiency that experienced teachers possess. Generally, new dance teachers are not given the training or mentoring needed in order to succeed in these areas. One solution to this problem is encouraging new teachers to begin a practice of self-reflection. Several educational experts have been combining reflection with video class recordings as a development tool for pre-service teachers. Unfortunately, educators have not explored this combination for dance teachers in a studio environment. Therefore, little is known about the effect of video self-reflection on teachers in a dance technique class. This thesis examines three novice dance teachers as they use written self-reflection with video self- reflection to aid in their professional development. It will ask if the use of video self- reflection can be a useful tool that benefits novice dance teachers' professional development. As part of this thesis, five expert dance teachers were interviewed to define the qualities of good dance teachers and to discover how they have individually found their own ways to use reflection as part of their teaching process. The expert teachers were selected from various teaching fields of dance such as local studio, university, and professional level dance teachers. The study found that the three novice dance teachers were able to dissect personal and pedagogical issues with high quality empirical evidence. This improved their class teaching knowledge and eventually self-esteem. The study proved that video based self-reflection is a useful and positive tool that can help new dance teachers develop into good teachers.
