I study the relation between market structure and consumer technology adoption in the European mobile phone industry. I model the market as a dynamic oligopoly game played by forward looking firms that choose a common price for both adopting and existing consumers. An externality between firms emerges because each one fails to fully internalize the effects of its pricing decisions on overall adoption and consumption. The externality implies that oligopolies involve efficiency losses as firms tend to under-invest in market expansion. I conduct counterfactual experiments with an alternative market structure, finding that a monopolist could have charged lower prices and generated larger adoption rates than the factual at early stages of adoption. Consequently, consumer welfare could have been up to 200 million euro per month larger on average across countries than under observed oligopolies. An algorithm for solving Dynamic Oligopoly Games This chapter proposes an algorithm to numerically solve dynamic oligopoly games. It approximates the solution of the game by solving a series of problems in sequence. Each problem consists of solving the dynamic game with a slightly different discount factor, using the solution from the previous step as starting point. I run simulations that show the relative advantage of this approach. It increases convergence rates compared to standard nonlinear equation approaches. An Introduction to Dynamo: Diagrams for Evolutionary Game Dynamics. (Joint with Bill Sandholm) Dynamo: Diagrams for Evolutionary Game Dynamics is free, open-source software used to create phase diagrams and other images related to dynamical systems from evolutionary game theory. We describe how to use the software's default settings to generate phase diagrams quickly and easily. We then explain how to take advantage of the software's intermediate and advanced features to create diagrams that highlight the key properties of the dynamical system under study. Sample code and output are provided to help demonstrate the software's capabilities.
