This study examined levels of job satisfaction among police officers working in police departments located in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, as well as officers' perceptions or views of the leadership performance or style of their supervisors. It was assumed that those aspects of bad leadership performance or style, or at least such a perception, and officer job dissatisfaction leads to low morale in law enforcement agencies. Low morale in police departments has been in the headlines of newspapers nationwide for years. It has been shown that low morale in organizations such as police departments leads to other serious issues. In this connection, the overall aim of this study is to make a contribution to the general debate surrounding these issues. An exploratory, 56 question survey was administered to a convenience sample of police officers from several departments throughout the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois in July of 2014, in order to determine their level of satisfaction with the department and their perception of the performance of their leaders or supervisors. The survey utilized close-ended, 5-point Likert scale questions and one open-ended response option to allow officers to express their concerns or suggestions on how to improve morale. This research uncovered statistically significant differences between male versus female officers, officers in patrol versus other functions, and officers of non-rank versus ranking officers in their perceptions of the leadership performance or style of their supervisors. It was discovered that negative perceptions of leadership performance of supervisors were not isolated to one department, but that they were evenly distributed, consistently experienced across the police departments studied around the northwest suburbs. But even though perceptions of leadership performance of supervisors were generally found to be negative, an overwhelming majority of officers were satisfied with their job and proud to work for their police department.
