Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2015.
This dissertation is about contemporary media's fascination with and strategies for creating "Old Shanghai", an imagined and performed place and time. Over the last thirty years, Old Shanghai has become an aesthetic and expressive trope within cultural productions, a trope evoked through narrative forms and multimedia performances ranging from novels and films to images and music. These narratives and performances of Old Shanghai have created an intertextual web of meanings woven through a set of leitmotifs---recurring allusions, tropes, references, and interpretations---that shape and are shaped by contemporary imaginations of the city. As a dynamic and polysemic place, Old Shanghai has become a projection of contemporary fantasies, nostalgia, and memory culture in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and in global contexts of artistic creativity.

Focusing on contemporary films, popular music, and a soundwalk project, I analyze recurrent patterns and aesthetics of place-making involved in the discursive and performative construction of Old Shanghai. Each chapter explores a concept central to the rhetorical and reflexive processes of representing Old Shanghai: musical narrativity, the intertextuality and reflexivity of genre, the performance of place, and the embodiment of historicity and memory. Through the analysis of selected works, I identify the repeated elements and representational styles used to envision Old Shanghai through narratives and images, songs and soundscapes, and sites and performances. I argue that music, both as sound and as social practice, plays a significant role in creating senses of place in these artistic treatments of Old Shanghai. Building upon ethnomusicological theories of the relations between music and social life, I present an approach for analyzing the role of music in the processes by which places are constructed, commodified, contested, and made meaningful.
