Thesis (Ph.D.)--Regent University, 2015.
From 1930-1933, prominent Warner Bros. films focused on Depression-era struggle in the form of money, crime, and morals. Warner Bros. was known for "ripping from the headlines" as a means to find film content during the Great Depression. The following pages detail the studio's headline-focused production method from 1930-1933. Warner Bros.' films were often recognized as tough, hard-hitting narratives that reflected the blazing headlines of the era. Harry Warner acknowledged that films had a social responsibility that his studio would never take for granted. Through what this dissertation defined as social genre theory, this dissertation examines how Warner Bros.' films use both genre and social surroundings to connect with audiences to provoke useful discussion from engaged viewers.
