This study investigated the ways that modern depictions of Asian women conform and deviate from the Madame Butterfly and Dragon Lady stereotypes via a close textual analysis. This study used The Wolverine (2013) as a representative sample as it contains characters that display similarities to the two female Asian stereotypes. In the film, Mariko was chosen to be representative of the Madame Butterfly while Yukio was chosen as being similar to the Dragon Lady. Upon completion of the analysis, it was discovered that Mariko and Yukio deviated more than they conformed to their initially perceived stereotypes. Despite Mariko's and Yukio's deviations from the two stereotypes, they are not yet constitutive of a female action heroine. The lack of power that Mariko and Yukio hold throughout the film is used to perpetuate western dominating frameworks of the Orient without the blatant use of stereotypes.
